Executive Summary This analysis lays out the basic concepts, key issues, Internal, and external analysis. It also includes my strategic recommendations on the possible direction that could be taken based on the case study. Basic Concepts The IMAX strategy is two pronged. The 1st prong is to expand beyond institutional environments by opening IMAX theatres within multiplexes or convert existing multiplex screens. 2nd the launch of more Hollywood films in IMAX format. Key Issues 1.) Could IMAX thrive as a niche player that made large format films and systems? 2.) Would increasing the number of Hollywood movies released to IMAX format save the firm or just dilute the IMAX brand? 3.) They are Sonics Associates Inc. which IMAX owned 51% of the total company, and David Keighley Productions which is wholly owned by IMAX Corporation. Lastly, IMAX acquired Ride film Theatres. Also, IMAX has forged strategic alliances, relationships and joint ventures with some of the most prominent exhibitors in the world, including AMC Entertainment, Regal Cinemas, Inc., CJCGV, Lark International Multimedia, Medico Theatres, Inc., National Amusements, Inc., Tokyo Cinemas and many more regional operators. External Analysis PESTEL Political/Legal ― IMAX holds 46 patents and 7 pending patents in the United States as of 2007. ― Tipper Gore and Lynn Cheney are spear heading a campaign to place more strict regulations on the levels of violence, sex, and vulgar language uses in media outlets. This places a concern for IMAX because if this regulation is enforced it could eliminate some of the previously formatted IMAX films and defiantly will place a burden on the future of the IMAX conversions. Economic ― In the 1990s there was a huge building boom, and with that boom movie theatres were going up all over the place.
